A quick stir-fried Broccoli side dish

Mix together sugar, cornstarch, soy sauce, and sherry. Set aside.
You can use most "hard" vegetables (green beans, green and red peppers, bamboo shoots, cabbage, etc...) in this dish in addition to, or as a substitute for, the broccoli.
Heat skillet. Add oil, ginger and garlic to skillet. Add broccoli (and other vegetables) and stir-fry over high heat (stirring constantly) for two minutes.
Add 3 tbs. water to the pan and cover. Cook for another three minutes.
Add the broth mixture and stir until sauce thickens. Sprinkle with black pepper and serve immediately.
